This past Monday, October 30th, I attended a philanthropy meeting for a non-profit in which I serve. One of the ladies at the meeting asked me, "how did the day before Halloween go at school for you?" My response was immediate.

"A lot better than what school ON Halloween is going to be like tomorrow."

She laughed, and followed that up with, "or the day AFTER Halloween." This comedic exchange definitely lightened my mood about going to school on a holiday. Specifically, going to school on HALLOWEEN.

I can't imagine any teacher has ever shared excitement over the idea of teaching on Halloween. The non-stop chatting around trick-or-treating, the random outbursts to share Halloween costumes, favorite candy debates, etc., In addition, there are the pre & post Halloween school days as well that stir up unwanted chaos. I felt a song summarized & encompassed the timeline us teachers experienced. In keeping with the Halloween spirit, feel free to play this instrumental version of Monster Mash to give you a tune.

Monster Mash: Teacher Edition

I was working at school, the day before Halloween

When my ears heard the most outrageous things

For my students from their chairs, they spoke of what they would wear

And suddenly I knew it was too late to prepare

The night before, the week had only begun

The night before, the kids were coming undone

The night before, does anyone think this is fun?

The night before, help me, please, anyone!

From my desk in the corner of my room, tucked away

(Wa-ooh) To the carpet where my students learn & sing & play

(Wa-wa-ooh) The ghosts, the witches & the goblins came alive

(Wa-ooh) To scare one another & pretend to revive

Halloween Day, excitement filled everyone

Halloween Day, quiet voices there were none

Halloween Day, oh how our classroom sure spun

Halloween Day, is it time to be done?

The children talked non stop, all day

(Tennis shoe wa-ooh) Sharing lists of candies they got, oy vey

(Tennis shoe wa-ooh) My attempts to teach them were subpar at best

(Tennis shoe wao-ooh) Give me silence & a nap, it's a simple request

The class was chaos, no chance of doing much

(Wa-ooh) Kids talking over each other, sharing stories and such

(Wa-wa-ooh) My voice it soon was lost, for their volume definitely thrived

(Wa-ooh) There wasn't any way that I could try, 'Give me Five'

November 1st, when will the sugar rush end?

November 1st, any patience, can you lend?

November 1st, I just really need a friend

November 1st, actual learning I suspend

To the buses they went, "I survived," I did sing

(Wa-ooh) Celebrated the day done, after that bell did ring

(Wa-wa-ooh) Overtired they all were, the sugar rush it did crash

(Wa-oh) You would have thought these past few days were in fact, a Monster Mash

It's the weekend, I'm in recovery mode

It's the weekend, tucked in my humble abode

It's the weekend, one more Halloween at school

It's the weekend, why are school calendars so cruel?

Now everything's chill, kids are back to the grind

(Wa-ooh) Learning new things each day, no more candy do I find

(Wa-wa-ooh) For those who teach I know you know what I mean

(Wa-ooh) When you get back to school again, it'll be a whole new scene

The next school week, it's like it didn't occur

The next school week, it's like it all was a blur

The next school week, you can barely even tell

The next school week, I wish all you teachers well.

Sharing Perspective. Encouraging Perseverance.
